Online Community formed for those Missing New Orleans’ Carnival Season

There are so many things I love about living in Southeast Louisiana, The People are wonderful, the food is incredible, the vibe is vivacious, the culture is contagious and my favorite, the Carnival season! Sadly, two years ago was the last time I experienced Mardi Gras in New Orleans. The outbreak of the corona virus and state and local social distancing guidelines forced the cancelation of many major events in Southern Louisiana and along the gulf coast. The thought of it being canceled again in 2022 literally pains my carnival loving soul.

Then I occurred to me, how do I create a Mardi Gras community that is similar to the fun face to face Mardi Gras community that we experience during carnival.

First let’s determine what makes a successful community. I found an article that has a great description “A good community is one where neighbors take pride in their living environment, respecting and supporting one another regardless of age, gender, race or creed. A good community is a cohesive, safe, confident, prosperous and happy place.” (Bradshaw, 2013) This sounds like Mardi Gras to me! So reflexing on what makes the face-to-face Mardi Gras experience so fun, besides the big party fueled by alcohol that most people envision when they think of Mardi Gras, it’s not just about that.

Mardi Gras is a celebration of community! It’s all about praising those parading, tossing trinkets and beads from elaborately decorated floats to please the hopeful crowds, chanting “throw me something mister”, dancing in the neutral ground of the street, and absolutely sharing food and drink. “There is a magic that only happens when people get together face to face with neighbors.” (Biggs, 2016)

Mardi Gras is about community. So, what better way to remind us about all we love about Mardi Gras then to start an online community. The Facebook community “Missing Mardi Gras Mania” was born. This group on Facebook will have your Mardi Gras senses heightened. Visuals from your Carnival Scenes sans the smells. I encourage other carnival lovers alike to post their favorite costumes and Mardi Gras Moments! Join my group and let’s do a virtual Mardi Gras mambo!
